Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has left for South Korea to take part in the Global AI and Digital Summit — a major Pakistan AI summit moment for the federal government. Pakistan is expected to become the first country to sign the Digital and AI Compact at the event.

What the minister will do in Seoul

During the visit, she will attend a ministerial meeting on artificial intelligence (AI) — systems that can learn from data and support decisions — and digital inclusion. In a dedicated session she is expected to present Pakistan’s future roadmap for AI and digital development.

She will also put forward Pakistan’s view on expanding internet access and delivering digital services to the public. Separate meetings are scheduled with a vice president of Google on digital technology and AI, and bilateral talks with a World Bank vice president. Together, those engagements form the core of this Pakistan AI summit trip beyond the Compact signing itself.

Compact, policy and the rules already in place

The expected Digital and AI Compact signing would place Pakistan first among countries to endorse that agreement at the summit. At home, the country still lacks a dedicated regulatory framework for AI. Challenges linked to AI use are instead addressed through existing policies and rules, including the National Cyber Security Policy 2021, the Pakistan Cloud First Policy 2022, CERT Rules 2023 — which cover computer emergency response teams that handle cyber incidents — and the Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulation (CTDISR).

Earlier, Shaza Fatima said Pakistan’s AI policy had been prepared after consultations with relevant stakeholders. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, she said the government would now focus on putting that policy into practice. She also stressed the need to adopt emerging technologies so the country can move toward progress and development.

Officials have not yet announced detailed outcomes from the Google or World Bank meetings, or a public timetable for the Compact ceremony. Readers should treat the “first to sign” prospect as an expectation tied to the summit agenda, not as a completed act until it is formally confirmed.
