Government extends fuel relief through 2026

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the federal government will continue providing a petrol subsidy of Rs100 per litre to low-income consumers until the end of December 2026. The decision aims to shield vulnerable segments of society from high transportation costs as the country manages its economic recovery.

According to official data, the initiative has already reached approximately 15 million direct beneficiaries. When accounting for the families of these individuals, the government estimates that nearly 75 million people have felt the impact of the relief. To date, the national exchequer has spent roughly Rs28 billion on this targeted support.

Eligibility and monthly savings

The programme, often referred to as the Sasta Petrol Scheme, is specifically designed for owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles. For motorcycle and three-wheeler operators, the subsidy applies to a maximum of 20 litres of petrol per month. This is distributed through four weekly tokens worth Rs500 each, allowing for a total monthly saving of Rs2,000.

Owners of small cars with engine capacities up to 800cc—such as the Suzuki Mehran, Alto, and Bolan—are also eligible. These drivers can receive the Rs100 discount on up to 30 litres of petrol every month, resulting in a maximum saving of Rs3,000. For motorcycle owners, the vehicle must have been registered on or after January 1, 2006, to qualify for the relief.

Recent price adjustments

The extension of the subsidy comes alongside a general reduction in petroleum prices. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the body responsible for regulating the midstream and downstream petroleum sector, recently revised prices under the government's approved mechanism.

Effective from November 5, 2026, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs7.06, bringing the retail rate to Rs362 per litre. High-speed diesel (HSD), which is primarily used in heavy transport and agriculture, saw a price cut of Rs3.71, taking its new price to Rs387.81 per litre.
