The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), the federal agency that tackles drug trafficking, said on Monday, October 19, that its operations had led to the arrest of nine people, one of them a woman. Officers seized 94.22 kg of narcotics worth more than Rs25.8 million in eight separate operations in different parts of Pakistan. An ANF spokesperson gave the breakdown, and the individual cases are now moving through the legal process.
This ANF drug seizure covered several kinds of narcotics. Cocaine and ecstasy, a synthetic stimulant, were among the drugs found, along with hashish, a cannabis resin, ice, a crystal form of methamphetamine, and opium, which is made from the poppy plant. Airports and highways are common points where enforcement agencies check for such movement, and this announcement shows both kinds of checks producing results.
Airport and road seizures
Two of the eight operations took place at Islamabad Airport. In the first, a traveller heading to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia was found with eight capsules of cocaine, weighing 160 grams in total, hidden inside the stomach, and that suspect was taken into custody. In the second, 4,350 ecstasy tablets weighing 2.75 kg were found in the baggage of a passenger flying to Dubai.
The remaining cases came from road checks. At the Fateh Jang toll plaza, officers found 26.4 kg of hashish in a vehicle and held one suspect. At a toll plaza near Multan, 1.2 kg of hashish and two kg of ice were taken out of a car, and two suspects were arrested. At the Rawalpindi toll plaza, 1.81 kg of methamphetamine was hidden inside two Ihram garments, the white cloth worn by pilgrims, and 500 grams of ice was packed in two bottles; the ANF took these from one suspect.
In Islamabad, a man and a woman were found with 7.2 kg of hashish beside a bus stop by Naval Anchorage Road. In Lahore, a motorcyclist was found with 2.2 kg of hashish near Sharifpura Road. The largest haul by weight came from Chagai district of Balochistan, close to Dalbandin, where officers found 20 kg of hashish and 30 kg of opium. Taken together, the weights from all eight operations add up to the 94.22 kg total the ANF reported, so the figures are consistent with one another.
Legal steps
The ANF has registered cases under Pakistan's narcotics law of 1997, and the matter is now moving through the legal process. Nine suspects therefore face proceedings after this ANF drug seizure, and the outcome of those cases is not yet known. Readers should watch for further official updates as the cases move forward.
