Anmol Pinky acquitted of further narcotics charges in Karachi on Friday when a local court cleared the alleged cocaine trafficker for lack of evidence and directed that she be freed from women’s jail if she is not wanted in any other case.

She appeared before the additional district and sessions judge (South) by video link. After hearing both sides, the court accepted the defence position that the prosecution had not brought enough proof to sustain a conviction.

What the court decided

Accounts of Friday’s hearing describe acquittal in a Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) — police unit that also handles some narcotics investigations — case registered in 2018, and some say a second matter linked to Gizri police station was cleared the same day. In either telling, Anmol Pinky acquitted status now covers five of the 22 cases filed against her.

The judge ordered police to release her from the women’s jail unless other pending matters still require her custody. That order does not by itself close every remaining case.

Earlier clearances and the defence argument

In August, an additional district and sessions court (South) in Karachi had already acquitted her in three drug-related cases registered at Gizri police station. Defence counsel said those FIRs dated from 2020, 2021 and 2022, and that she had earlier been declared an absconder in all three.

Counsel also told the court that co-accused Ali and Fahmida were acquitted in 2024. The defence argued she had been implicated mainly on statements attributed to those co-accused, so once they were cleared the prosecution could not securely convict her. The court agreed the evidence presented was insufficient.

Arrest claims and public attention

Pinky was reportedly arrested on 12 May from an apartment in Karachi’s Garden area in a joint raid by police and a civilian intelligence agency, on allegations she ran a citywide drug-supply network. She denied that account, saying she had been detained in Lahore about 15 days earlier and later shifted to Karachi.

At the time, authorities said a weapon, cocaine and other drugs worth around Rs1.5 million were recovered. Investigators told the court on 13 May that 1,540 grams of cocaine and 6,970 grams of raw material were seized in the operation. Public attention grew after a video circulated showing her escorted at court premises without handcuffs, drawing widespread criticism of how police handled the suspect.
