Authorities in Khyber sealed five private schools on Friday after inspection teams found their buildings in extremely poor condition and unsafe for students and teachers.

Officials in Landi Kotal, Bara and Jamrud said assistant commissioners in the three tehsils visited a number of private schools to check the state of the buildings. The sealed schools were spread across those three areas.

Why the checks began

Khyber Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali ordered the visits after 30 students and a teacher were killed when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar on Thursday. The district administration then formed three committees for the work.

Each committee was led by the assistant commissioner of a tehsil and included officials from the education department, the communication and works department, the irrigation department, and the tehsil municipal administration. The teams were told to visit all public and private educational institutions and report on the condition of school buildings.

What inspectors found

Officials said the five sealed schools posed a threat to the lives of both students and teachers. In some of them, roofs were covered only with bamboo and walls were crumbling, which officials said put everyone inside at great risk.

They said more visits would continue in the coming days. Inspection of public-sector educational institutions would also be carried out, they added.
