Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi said on Saturday that Karachi’s Green Line extension—from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park near Jama Cloth Market—will be completed in fiscal year 2026-27. He told reporters during a surprise visit to the construction site that the federal government has already released its share of funds for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) work, a dedicated bus corridor with separate lanes and stations.

Completion target and the 1.8km route

According to the governor, stations are being built along the roughly 1.8-kilometre route between Numaish Chowrangi and Municipal Park. He pressed officials and contractors to speed up construction so city residents can use the service as soon as possible. The Green Line extension is the remaining link that would push the BRT corridor closer to the Jama Cloth Market area, long a busy commercial zone for shoppers and workers.

He described the wider BRT Green Line as a major project that has already improved public transport options for many Karachiites. The city, he said, still needs large-scale Karachi transport projects because better daily commuting remains essential for residents.

Funding, federal role and political context

Mr Hashmi said the federal government’s allocated contribution for this phase has been released. Referring to the 18th Constitutional Amendment—which shifted many development powers to the provinces—he noted that Islamabad’s room to take on certain projects directly is now more limited. Even so, he said the federal government would keep supporting Karachi’s development.

He credited former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif with starting the Green Line as part of a modern mass-transit vision for the metropolis, and said Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had continued to back the city. Whenever the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had been in a position to serve, he added, it had tried to bring development work to Karachi. “The federal government is not oblivious to Karachi’s challenges,” he said. He also called Karachi a dynamic metropolis close to Pakistanis’ hearts, arguing that the city’s progress is tied to the country’s overall advance.
