200kg spoiled fish from Sukkur destroyed after Swabi check

The Sukkur-bound consignment was stopped in Swabi after cold-chain and SOP breaches made the fish unfit to eat; legal action has begun against those blamed.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Food Safety and Halal Food Authority (KPFSHFA) on Monday seized and destroyed 200 kilograms of spoiled fish in Swabi district. The fish was being supplied into the province from Sukkur and was stopped while it was still being transported.

According to the authority’s spokesperson, inspectors found the consignment unfit for human consumption. The main problems were breaks in the cold chain — the temperature-controlled handling needed for perishable food — and failure to follow the prescribed standard operating procedures, or SOPs, for safe transport.

Why the fish was condemned

Fish spoils quickly if it is not kept cold from packing to delivery. Once the cold chain is broken, bacteria can multiply and the product can become unsafe even if it still looks saleable. KPFSHFA said those conditions applied to this load, so the stock was destroyed rather than allowed onto local markets.

The spokesperson said legal proceedings have been started against those responsible for the violation. Strict action would be taken against anyone endangering public health through unsafe food supply, the spokesperson added.

Province-wide enforcement message

Ensuring safe and wholesome food for citizens remains the authority’s top priority, the spokesperson said. Operations against adulteration and unhygienic supply would continue across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa without discrimination.

The authority has also stepped up its awareness work. Traders and transporters have been told to follow food-safety rules and to maintain proper cold-chain arrangements when moving perishable items such as fish.

How the public can help

Citizens have been encouraged to report food-safety concerns through the authority’s complaint helpline. Officials framed that tip line as part of a shared effort to keep food sold in the province safer.

No further details were given on the number of people named in the case, the exact route taken after Sukkur, or laboratory test results beyond the finding that the fish was unfit to eat.
