The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Department has raised the province’s daily wheat release quota from 3,000 to 4,000 metric tonnes. The increase follows a Peshawar High Court decision and directions from the Cabinet Oversight Committee, according to a departmental notification dated around the announcement from Peshawar on 19 October.
The additional 1,000 metric tonnes will be supplied to operational flour mills from National Reserve Centre (NRC) warehouses in Azakhel. Officials said the step is meant to use stored wheat in time and stop further losses to stocks already affected by flooding.
Why the quota was increased
The Food Department acted after a report by the Storage and Enforcement Officer at NRC Azakhel. That report said flash flooding had damaged stored stocks: floodwater entered the warehouses and affected the lower layers of wheat bags. Six of the centre’s 11 warehouses were damaged; the other five remained safe.
The same report urged an immediate release of stocks to prevent further harm, especially with more rainfall forecast. The extra wheat is to be shared across districts in line with the province’s population of 43.84 million.
How much each major district gets
Under the revised arrangement, Peshawar will receive an additional 116 metric tonnes a day. Mardan follows with 67 tonnes, then Swabi with 46, Charsadda with 45, Nowshera with 43, and Lower Dir with 40.
Other listed additions include 39 tonnes for Lower Swat, 35 for Abbottabad, 44 for Mansehra, 45 for Dera Ismail Khan, 33 for Bannu, 32 for Bajaur, and 30 for Kohat. The remaining quota is to be spread among other districts under their own allocations. The Director Food has told district food controllers and rationing controllers to carry out the new plan.
Checks on mills, prices and records
For transparency, the Director Food has ordered district food controllers and rationing controllers to send verified lists of operational flour mills to the release committee before any wheat is lifted. Officials must also update wheat allocation, transport and release records on the ICT application without delay.
The department says government flour made from the extra wheat should reach consumers through authorised dealers at officially notified prices. Controllers have been told to watch district quotas, confirm which mills are running, and ensure sales at prescribed rates so the public gets the benefit of the larger supply.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa mein ab rozana zyada gandum mills ko diya ja raha hai — pehle 3,000 ton, ab 4,000 ton. Yeh zyada stock Azakhel ke godamon se aayega, jahan sailab se kuch gandum kharab hone ka khatra tha. Peshawar aur doosre zilon ko unki abadi ke hisaab se hissa milega. Logon ke liye matlab yeh hai ke sarkari atta notified qeemat par dealers ke zariye zyada asani se milne ki koshish ki ja rahi hai.
