Kahna police have arrested a man named Irfan in a Lahore murder case, accusing him of a role in the killing of his mother, Azra Bibi. A spokesman said on Wednesday, 14 October, that Irfan had been named as an accused in the case. Police say Azra Bibi was killed inside her home, with her former husband and other accomplices also involved, after a child maintenance dispute.
What police say happened
According to the investigation, Azra Bibi was murdered after she refused to withdraw a maintenance petition. Police say the main suspects — her former husband, her son and other accomplices — subjected her to severe violence and opened fire on her inside the house.
That account is what police have stated. The spokesman said Irfan had been named in his mother's murder. Officers have not given a public account of who fired, how many people were in the house, or when the attack took place.
The maintenance petition
Before her death, Azra Bibi had filed a legal case against her former husband seeking maintenance for their children. Maintenance, in a family case, is money a court can order a parent to pay for a child's upkeep. Police say the killing followed her refusal to drop that petition.
Investigators have described the dispute over maintenance as the reason for the attack. Police have not said how many children were covered by the petition, or what sum was being sought. Those details were not part of what the spokesman said on Wednesday.
Who has been arrested
Police registered a case after the killing and arrested Irfan. On Wednesday, raids were still under way for the remaining suspects, whom officers described as fugitives. The former husband and the other accomplices had not been arrested when the spokesman spoke.
Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran said he felt deep grief that a son was allegedly involved in his mother's murder. A DIG Operations is the senior officer who directs day-to-day police operations in the city. Kamran said the remaining suspects would be brought before the law soon. He said the Lahore murder case was being handled strictly on merit, so that those involved would receive a punishment meant to set an example.
