Jail authorities must arrange heart medication for Imran Khan's sister Uzma Khan, after an order from the Lahore High Court. Justice Abher Gul Khan passed the direction while hearing a petition against the detention of Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi, according to The Nation. Dawn reported the same court direction on heart medication.

The medication order

Dr Uzma Khan is to receive her heart medicines inside jail. Her husband, Ahad Khan, came to the hearing and described a heart condition that requires three medicines every day. He asked the judge to let those prescribed medicines reach her at the jail daily. The court then told the jail authorities to provide them.

A separate request stayed open. The petitioners want the Lahore deputy commissioner, the Lahore CCPO and other officials to appear in person. CCPO is the short form of Capital City Police Officer. Justice Abher Gul Khan reserved judgment on that request, so no order to summon them has been made yet.

What the lawyer asked for

Rana Mudassar Umar, counsel for the petitioners, asked that the superintendent of police, the Lahore CCPO and the deputy commissioner be called in person. He wanted them to explain the notification issued for the detention. In his submission, the women were not asking to be treated as privileged prisoners; the issue was access to basic necessities.

For Noreen Niazi, he listed clothes, medicines and prescription glasses, and asked that she be allowed to see her family and her lawyer. The Nation's report does not record a ruling on those items. They sit apart from the heart-medication direction, which the court did give.

Who the petition names

The Nation's account of the hearing names two women, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi. It identifies only Dr Uzma Khan as a sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, shortened to PTI, is the party he founded. The report does not call Noreen Niazi his sister, and it gives no ages, photographs or names of any other sisters.

Ahad Khan appears only as Dr Uzma Khan's husband, and only to describe her heart condition and the three daily medicines. The newspaper does not quote a longer statement from him.

What is still undecided

On the published account, the settled point is medical: jail authorities must provide Imran Khan's sister Uzma Khan with her heart medication. The Lahore High Court order on calling officials into court is still awaited, because that issue was reserved. The reports do not name the jail, set out the text of the detention notification, or give a date for the next hearing.

Those gaps should stay marked as unconfirmed. What readers can rely on is the health direction, and the fact that a decision on summoning senior Lahore officers has not yet been given.
