Pakistan Post orders Punjab checks on kite consignments

Offices of Pakistan Post in Punjab have been told to stop kites and banned kite strings from travelling by mail, courier or app-based delivery before Basant 2027. The direction went out on Tuesday, and any suspected breach is to be passed to the police at once.

Punjab's government had called a high-level meeting to look at arrangements for Basant 2027, and the postal direction followed that meeting. Kites and the strings used to fly them are not to be booked or handed over through postal, courier or online channels anywhere in the province. Officials have also been told to watch how the goods are stored, sold and distributed.

What the postal order covers

The Postmaster General of Central Punjab Circle, the senior postal officer for that region, put the instructions in a letter. Officials are to monitor how kites and dangerous strings move, where they are kept, where they are sold, and how they are distributed. Closest attention goes to metallic wires and metal-coated kite strings: lines made of metal or wrapped in it, treated as prohibited because a taut metal line can cut skin.

Across Punjab, the letter says, authorities prohibit carrying or delivering kites and kite strings by postal service, courier company or online platform. Staff must take effective steps so that no one can book these goods, send them on, or complete a delivery. A customer at a courier desk or on a delivery app is covered in the same way as a customer at a post-office counter.

How suspects will be reported

If an item looks prohibited, officials must tell the nearest police station immediately. Pakistan Post has also told staff to identify anyone who tries to book or dispatch such materials and to inform the relevant authorities, including the deputy commissioner's office. The deputy commissioner is the senior officer of the district administration.

Transport operators, courier companies and online delivery services have been asked to help spot suspicious consignments and report them. Pakistan Post has also called for dedicated WhatsApp groups so that the offices involved can pass information quickly and act together against a violation.

For a household, the change is at the point of sending. A kite, a length of metallic wire or a metal-coated string is not supposed to be accepted for dispatch or dropped at an address anywhere in Punjab through the post, a courier or an online service. A person who still tries to book that parcel can be named to the police and the district administration, not merely turned away at the counter.
