Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry told Reuters that now-suspended Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Sohail Afridi and some cabinet members were taken into preventive custody on Sunday. The detentions followed the suspension of the provincial government. He said anyone with a case will be charged and tried, and the others will be released. He said the detentions happened at the chief minister’s house in Peshawar.
Who police named
Dawn reported on Monday that a senior police official confirmed eight people are in preventative custody, including Afridi, PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar and Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati. Dawn said sources had earlier described Afridi and Akbar as under house arrest under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order. No criminal charge against Afridi is named.
What an earlier version got wrong
An earlier version said PTI members had been arrested in an unnamed northern province, and that no report named the chief minister. The Reuters account Chaudhry gave names Afridi and calls the detention preventive custody, not an arrest. The province is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
