BYD electric cars in Pakistan are moving closer to production, with the plant expected to begin operations by mid-December. Hub Power Company (Hubco) said at a corporate briefing on October 20, 2026 that vehicle production will rely entirely on imported raw materials and components at first. Local content is expected to grow over time.

Hubco management said the long-term objective is to localise up to 80 per cent of each vehicle. In their view, this should improve cost competitiveness and reduce reliance on imports. The company is targeting an initial sales run rate of about 1,000-1,500 vehicles a month as output ramps up.

Timing of the plant start

Topline Securities said the BYD plant is expected to commence operations within the next four to five weeks, by mid-December. Four to five weeks from the October 20 briefing would fall in late November, so the exact start date is not yet clear from the information available.

Competition and local EV plans

According to Topline Securities, Lucky Cement told analysts on Tuesday that competition in the EV segment remains intense. The pressure is strongest from Chinese completely built-up (CBU) vehicles, meaning fully assembled cars brought in from abroad. Lucky Cement's comments were relayed through the brokerage.

The company aims to begin local production of EV models by the first quarter of calendar 2027, with volumes and model offerings expected to rise gradually after that. BYD plans to add models in phases, focusing on segments that can generate meaningful sales volumes, the brokerage said. BYD is a Chinese carmaker, and its Pakistan plans are still at an early stage.

What happens next

The next milestones are the plant's start of operations, the ramp-up toward the initial sales target, and the planned rise in local content. No prices, model names or driving range figures have been announced for BYD vehicles in Pakistan so far. Readers should watch for official updates on those details as the plant nears operation.
