The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed February 7, 2027 as the start date for the first phase of local government elections in Punjab. The commission announced the date on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in a short order on the province-wide electoral process. The polls will be staged in phases across the province.

What the commission decided

The announcement followed a hearing on the conduct of local government elections in Punjab. A four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the case. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, the provincial chief secretary and the local government secretary appeared before the commission.

The ECP had reserved its decision after hearing the provincial government's request. It then issued the short order setting February 7 as the starting date for the first phase.

Why the province asked for more time

At the hearing, the chief election commissioner recalled an earlier meeting between the ECP and the Punjab cabinet committee. At that meeting, the provincial government had proposed holding the elections between December 15 and January 15.

The Punjab chief secretary later told the commission that the province needed two months to complete the necessary arrangements. He asked that the polls be held after January 20, pointing to dense fog in December, particularly in Lahore and other parts of Punjab, along with shorter daylight hours and cold weather. The provincial government had sought time until January 20, 2027 to complete its preparations.

What happens next

February 7, 2027 is the start date for the first phase only. The announcement did not give dates for the later phases of the province-wide process.

The Punjab government now has until the February date to finish the arrangements it said it needed. Voters and candidates in the province will need to follow the ECP's notices for the detailed schedule as it is issued.
