Governor rule in Pakistan is a proclamation that moves legislative and executive powers between the federal government and a province, according to a chronology published by Geo. Geo says such proclamations, and emergencies, have been made many times, usually on the plea of national security or after a sudden crisis. Dawn, in a concise history dated 12 October 2026, and The News, in a chronology since 1949, have published their own timelines. The Geo account is datelined Lahore.

Why it has been imposed

According to Geo, allegations of corruption, nepotism and maladministration against the rulers of the day have also been used to justify an emergency or governor's rule. The report places those allegations alongside national security and a sudden crisis as the reasons given at the time. The stated result is a redistribution of legislative and executive powers between the federation and the province. Geo treats the two measures together because both have been proclaimed at many points in the country's history.

West Punjab, 1949 to 1951

Geo dates the first case in West Punjab to 25 January 1949, and says it lasted until April 1951. The then premier, Liaquat Ali Khan, dismissed Chief Minister Nawab Mamdot's government. He did not believe Mamdot's claim that he still had the confidence of a majority of MPAs, the members of the provincial assembly. That dismissal is the earliest episode Geo cites for governor rule in Pakistan.

Every province, at least once

Geo says research shows every Pakistani province has been placed under an emergency or this form of rule at some point. Sometimes the order covered a single province; at other times, broader directions from the federal capital brought the entire country under the same kind of rule. Geo illustrates the chronology with an image of KP Governor House in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the caption only identifies the building. Dawn has also headlined a concise history of emergency rule.

A claim that stays unconfirmed

On X, the PTI official account said Pakistan was again making "world headlines for all the wrong reasons." It alleged "an emergency imposed on an entire province," an elected government "pushed aside," and communications cut "to silence peaceful citizens." The post added that a former prime minister had been "jailed for over three years," and that his family was locked up.

It names neither the province nor the former prime minister. The chronologies in Geo, Dawn and The News do not confirm a new use of governor rule in Pakistan, so the party's allegations remain unconfirmed. Neither the Dawn headlines nor The News headline names a province said to be under a fresh order.
