Shipping containers blocked main roads in Peshawar on Sunday, the day after the federal government imposed an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dawn reporter Manzoor Ali wrote.
He reported no mobile signal in the city that morning. Stations of the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit stayed shut. GT Road was closed at Firdous Chowk, also called Malik Saad Shaheed Chowk, by containers. Police allowed only pedestrians past, and officers were posted along GT Road between Hospital Road and the chowk.
The road from Surey Chowk toward Khyber Road, which leads into the Red Zone, was blocked with containers and the traffic gate was shut. Near the central jail, on the way to Sher Shah Suri Road, police turned walkers back toward Shoba Bazaar. Jail Pul, between Sher Shah Suri Road and Khyber Bazaar, was closed. The Civil Secretariat was nearly empty.
A barrier on Khyber Road near Army Stadium stayed shut. A passer-by told Ali that University Road was blocked at Tehkal. Stadium Chowk had containers, with cars let through in a single line each way. A container was also placed on Arbab Road, between Mall Road and Saddar Road. Saddar Bazaar was partly open. By the afternoon the internet had stopped working.
Dawn did not give a count of the containers. A figure of 10,000-plus searches for the chief minister was attached to the feed item. It is not in the Dawn report, and this story does not treat it as news.
