Dawn, citing AFP, reported on Monday that British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told MPs that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps “almost certainly directed” a major scare at a UK airbase used by the US military for its war in Iran.
What Burnham told MPs
“I can confirm our assessment that it is highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. We will not tolerate these threats on our soil,” Burnham said. Dawn reported that he said new sanctions would be unveiled. The Monday report does not give a casualty figure.
Iran’s earlier denial
The denial is not a second Monday headline with no names. On 28 September Dawn reported that Iran’s embassy in London said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” speculation linking Tehran to a bomb scare near RAF Fairford, a UK base used by the United States. That statement is from 28 September. Burnham’s “almost certainly” line is from 12 October.
