The Sindh government is setting up Pakistan's first Marble City in Karachi through the Karachi Marble City project. The government says the project is meant to attract investment, promote industrial activity and create employment opportunities.

What the park will do

Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the project at a pre-launch ceremony for the Karachi Marble City Industrial Park. He said it would allow marble and granite from Sindh and other parts of the country to be processed locally, using modern machinery and technology.

Marble and granite are widely used in construction and interior finishing across Pakistan, so local processing would keep more of the work inside the country. The ceremony was a pre-launch event, which means the park is still at an early stage.

Land, cost and financing

The park is planned over more than 300 acres along the Northern Bypass, a road link in Karachi. The estimated cost is $250 million, and the project will run under a public-private partnership, a model in which government and private investors share the framework, the financing and much of the operation.

The government has set the average land price at about Rs25 million per acre and says it will offer installment plans, which let investors pay for land over time rather than in one sum. Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment, said the government is also exploring affordable electricity, machinery on rent and modern industrial equipment for businesses in the park.

What happens next

Investor registration is scheduled to begin next month, and it is the first formal step for businesses that want space in the park. Because the project is still being set up, details such as the final layout and the timing of operations will become clearer as the park takes shape.
