The federal cabinet on Wednesday ratified a defence cooperation agreement with Kuwait, formalising a framework meant to deepen collaboration between the two countries in the defence sector, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad. Officials described the arrangement as aimed at promoting cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait across several defence-related fields.

What the agreement covers

Pakistan and Kuwait signed the Defence Cooperation Agreement on June 11, 2023. Under the pact, the two sides are to work together in military manufacturing, electronic communications systems, scientific research, military media, and cultural and sports activities.

A joint military committee will oversee how the agreement is put into practice. That includes organising joint military exercises, official visits and other cooperative programmes.

The agreement is to remain in force for five years and renew automatically unless either side chooses to end it. Both countries also commit to protecting confidential military information and to settling any disputes that arise from the pact through diplomatic channels.

Path to Pakistan’s ratification

The Kuwaiti government had already ratified the agreement on July 19, the Prime Minister’s Office said. Wednesday’s cabinet decision completes Pakistan’s formal approval of the same text.

Both sides have framed the partnership in terms of mutual trust and shared strategic interests, saying closer defence ties should support mutual security and contribute to regional peace and stability.
