Rawalpindi district has recorded a sharp decline in viral infections, reporting 91 confirmed dengue cases in Rawalpindi today through November 5 compared to 1,586 cases during the exact same period last year. The figures were presented during a meeting of the District Emergency and Response Committee (DERC), presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner Social Services Fazail Mudassar.
Health authorities attributed the reduction in local dengue cases to extensive field monitoring and vector control operations carried out across the urban and suburban areas of the district.
Household inspections and larvae detection
During the briefing, health officials stated that field surveillance teams inspected nearly 5.9 million households and more than 2 million outdoor locations across the district. Dengue larvae were detected at over 243,000 spots during these routine checks.
Out of 4,676 high-risk larva locations requiring immediate vector suppression, specialized teams have completed containment operations at 4,622 sites. Field teams are currently working to clear the remaining 54 sites to prevent further breeding of the Aedes mosquito.
Surveillance and preventative measures
Addressing the committee, Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazail Mudassar instructed municipal departments and district health teams to remain on high alert. He directed staff to accelerate vector elimination in areas where larvae were identified and to maintain intensive hotspot monitoring.
Local authorities were also instructed to step up public awareness initiatives to keep seasonal breeding controlled as weather conditions transition.
