Police have named the former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister who is in custody. A senior police official told Dawn that eight people are in preventative custody, including now-suspended chief minister Sohail Afridi, PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar and Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati. Dawn’s report was updated on Monday afternoon.
Who confirmed it
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry told Reuters that Afridi and some cabinet members were taken into preventive custody on Sunday, after the provincial government was suspended. He said anyone with a case will be charged and tried, and the others will be released. Dawn said sources had earlier described Afridi and Akbar as under house arrest under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order. No criminal charge against Afridi is named in Dawn’s report.
The emergency is in KP
The federal government imposed an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday under Articles 232 and 234. That is a provincial measure. It is not an emergency across all of Pakistan.
What the first version got wrong
The first version of this article used only an ETV Bharat headline. That headline did not name the chief minister, and the article said Zaviya had not seen a confirmation. Dawn and Reuters had already reported the police and interior ministry account. The running account is Zaviya’s live story on governor’s rule.
