Lahore AQI did not rise above 300 on any day in October 2026, the first time in five years, a senior provincial minister said. Maryam Aurangzeb said the average level of PM2.5, the fine particles that most affect breathing, fell 27 percent from October 2025. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, is a scale that rates how polluted the air is, so the figures point to noticeably cleaner air in the city during the month.
What the minister said
Aurangzeb described air pollution as a serious public health problem and said smog should be assessed using scientific facts and verified statistics. According to her, average PM2.5 in Lahore was 136.3 micrograms per cubic metre in October 2025 and 100.1 in October 2026. She added that the Pakistan Air Quality Initiative recorded lower pollution at 26 monitoring sites across the city.
She also cited Punjab Climate Watch data, which showed an overall 15 percent improvement across six major pollution indicators. The highest Lahore AQI level recorded in October fell by 28 percent. In October 2025, the city had four days with AQI above 300, while October 2026 had none, and she said it was the cleanest October in Lahore since 2023.
Fire data and weather
The minister also cautioned against reading the improvement too simply. NASA's fire detection system picks up heat changes, she said, but each detection cannot be counted as a separate fire. The number of fires on both sides of the border, she added, cannot on its own show how severe the pollution is.
Wind direction, temperature and other weather conditions also shape the air people breathe. In winter, pollution settles close to the ground and smog increases, so credit for every improvement cannot go only to government policies. Independent review and transparent monitoring of the figures are needed, she said.
What comes next
Aurangzeb said government efforts would continue until residents have clean and healthy air. No new measures or timetable for the coming winter were announced alongside the figures. Readers should watch for independent checks of the Lahore AQI readings, which the minister herself called for.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Lahore mein October 2026 mein AQI kisi din 300 se oopar nahi gaya, jo paanch saal mein pehli baar hua. Sarkari bayan ke mutabiq barik zarrat (PM2.5) ki ausat 27 fisad kam hui, yani hawa pichle saal se behtar rahi. Lekin sardiyon mein smog phir barh sakta hai, is liye ehtiyat zaroori hai.
