Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz opened a new Crime Surveillance Unit in Lahore on Friday. It is a digital setup meant to watch how police are performing at district, circle and station level across Punjab. The unit will follow the work of district police officers (DPOs), deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) and station house officers (SHOs), the officers who run individual police stations. The government says the system will show crime trends and how quickly police respond.
How the unit will operate
A briefing at the event said that crime figures for every police station in the province will be reachable through a single click. The unit will gather and analyse data under 20 crime categories, and its experts will prepare analysis reports to support monitoring and decisions. The aim is to help officials act on crime patterns quickly and make police responses more timely.
The unit head briefed the chief minister on its structure and functions while she visited the facility and spoke with the officers posted there.
Complaints, FIRs and online content
The chief minister voiced concern about complaints that first information reports (FIRs), the formal complaints that start a criminal case, were being registered after unjustified delays. She told the authorities to make proper use of the records held in police station databases and to respond promptly to negative campaigns against the police. The unit is also expected to track how quickly citizens' complaints and applications are resolved, so that unnecessary delays can be identified.
Under national security requirements, the unit will also identify notable social media posts, according to the briefing.
Reform plan and the government's stance
Maryam Nawaz asked the Punjab IG for a comprehensive plan to reform the police. She said the government was determined to free the province of all kinds of crime and that the unit would make the anti-crime drive more effective. She also cautioned against judging the entire force over the conduct of a few people. She described the fall in crime rates achieved through police reforms as an encouraging development that must be sustained. The reform plan is now expected from the Punjab IG.
