Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi fell inside Kot Lakhpat Jail after suddenly feeling dizzy while walking in his barrack, his lawyer Barrister Taimoor Malik said. The lawyer said Qureshi hurt his knee and arm in the fall.
Medical checks after the fall
Barrister Taimoor Malik said jail authorities collected blood samples from Shah Mahmood Qureshi and sent them to Shaukat Khanum Hospital for examination. He added that an application would be filed for a CT scan and further medical treatment, on the advice of Dr Yasmin Rashid.
A CT scan is an imaging test that helps doctors look more closely at injuries or other problems inside the body. The lawyer’s account is the basis for what is known so far about the episode and the next medical steps sought for the PTI leader.
Why he is still in custody
Shah Mahmood Qureshi remains in jail over multiple cases registered after the 9 May 2023 unrest, even though he has won acquittal or bail in several matters. Those protests followed the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, and involved attacks on military and government sites.
The PTI vice chairman faces cases tied to that unrest in Lahore, including matters linked to Jinnah House and Askari Tower. In January 2024 he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with Imran Khan in the cipher case; the Islamabad High Court overturned that conviction in June 2024.
According to Barrister Taimoor Malik, Qureshi has been acquitted or granted bail in around 50 cases in Punjab and Islamabad. Post-arrest bail applications in two cases were still awaiting decisions, which his lawyer said was keeping him in prison. In June 2026 an anti-terrorism court also acquitted him in a 9 May case over the burning of police vehicles in Lahore.
As of 3 November 2026 he was still behind bars. An anti-terrorism court had extended his interim bail until 6 November 2026 in other 9 May cases, including the Jinnah House and Askari Tower matters. His continued detention is linked to pending cases and bail proceedings, not to the overturned cipher conviction.
