PM chairs capital hospital review

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday chaired a review meeting on the Jinnah Medical Complex and was told the 403-bed hospital is expected to become operational by March 23, 2027, with about 59 percent of construction completed. He told officials to keep the project within its agreed construction timeframe.

He said appointments at the hospital must be transparent and based on merit. He also directed that a private-sector organisation be engaged to manage the facility in line with international healthcare standards.

Diagnostics and day-to-day readiness

The prime minister stressed that advanced diagnostic services should remain within reach of low- and middle-income patients, and asked officials to treat modern diagnostics as a central part of the project’s planning.

Officials briefed the meeting that work to install and maintain medical equipment was continuing. They said a digital hospital management system was being developed and that other administrative arrangements were also in progress. Procurement of advanced diagnostic equipment and scanners, they added, was under way.

What the prime minister wants next

The directions point to a dual track: finish construction on schedule, and set up staffing and management rules before the hospital opens. By calling for a private operator and merit-based hiring, the prime minister framed quality of care and governance as part of the same delivery plan as the physical build.

For patients who rely on public-sector hospitals in and around the capital, the meeting’s focus on diagnostics and digital systems signals that organisers are trying to prepare clinical and administrative capacity alongside bricks and mortar—Officials told the meeting the 403-bed hospital is expected to open by March 23, 2027, with about 59 percent of the work completed.
