Karachi University has opened a Karachi University area colleges exam results investigation after complaints about second-year results and marksheets at its affiliated law colleges. A three-member committee drawn from nominees linked to the Supreme Court, the Sindh High Court and the federal Higher Education Commission (HEC, Pakistan’s higher-education regulator) has been tasked with an impartial, transparent inquiry and a fact-based report to the university administration.

Why students raised complaints

Some students pointed to alleged contradictions and errors in the announced results. They said they had passed their exams but were declared failed on the marksheets issued to them. Affected students lodged formal scrutiny applications and argued they deserved to be declared successful in the BA/LLB examinations.

Under the usual rules, scrutiny only allows a recount or re-totalling of marks already awarded. Fresh marking of answer scripts, known as re-evaluation, falls outside that process. Weighing those legal and administrative limits, the university decided an independent probe was needed so complaints could be examined beyond routine scrutiny.

Committee members and next steps

The panel comprises Justice (retired) Zia Pervez, Justice (retired) Nadeem Akhtar and Dr Nazir Hussain of the federal HEC. Members are to hold detailed talks with all sides, review evidence and records, and meet affected students, teachers who marked scripts, and staff who handle answer-book checks after scrutiny requests. They will also visit the Examinations Department and speak with the Controller of Examinations and other relevant officers before submitting their report to the Karachi University administration, with the matter to be handled on a priority basis.

The committee, formed last week, will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, 4 November at 12pm in the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat. Separately, the university plans a full academic calendar for affiliated law colleges covering teaching, academic and examination work for the year. That calendar is to be placed before the next Academic Council meeting this month for approval. Karachi University said it remains committed to transparency, fairness, accountability and merit in academic and administrative matters.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • Students flagged alleged errors in second-year BA/LLB results and filed scrutiny applications after marksheets showed them as failed.
  • Last week: Karachi University formed the three-member inquiry committee.
  • Wednesday, 4 November, 12pm: committee’s first meeting at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat.
  • This month: draft academic calendar for affiliated law colleges to be presented to the Academic Council.
