Pakistan’s junior hockey team defeated China’s Guangdong 5-2 on Wednesday in a six-match friendly Test series at the International Hockey Stadium in Gojra. The contest, held at the Olympic Village, was arranged to promote friendship between Pakistan and China and to give both sides competitive hockey against foreign opposition.

How the match unfolded

Pakistan pressed from the start and stayed on the front foot for most of the game. The juniors went into the interval 3-2 ahead, then added two further goals to close out a clear win. Officials at the ground included Toba Tek Singh Deputy Commissioner Maham Asif Malik, District Police Officer Akhlaq Tarar, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Director of Domestic and High Performance Tahir Zaman, and Director Administration Col (retd) Nasir Akhunzada.

Organisers said the series is meant to tighten sporting links with China while giving young players match practice against an international side. The PHF — the national body that runs hockey in Pakistan — has been using such fixtures as part of a wider push to rebuild the game at home.

Other results from Guangdong’s tour

During their visit, Guangdong also faced several Pakistani departmental teams. Rangers won 3-1, Mari Energies won 5-2, and Customs took a narrow 3-2 victory. Pakistan Navy beat the Chinese side 3-1 at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium in Islamabad. Guangdong’s one noted success against a departmental outfit was a 4-2 shootout win over Pakistan Army after a tight contest.

Those games, together with the juniors’ Test in Gojra, have given domestic clubs and emerging players rare chances to measure themselves against overseas opposition. The PHF wants regular competitive fixtures of this kind as it tries to revive Pakistan hockey.

Why the series matters for Pakistan hockey

Pakistan was once a world power in the sport, with three Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles. In recent years the national side has fallen behind leading hockey nations. The federation is now focusing on grassroots work, stronger domestic competition, and clearer routes for young players into the senior national team. The Guangdong series sits inside that longer plan: more tough matches for juniors and departmental sides, and a steadier path toward restoring competitive depth.

Yeh friendly series Pakistan-China dosti aur hockey ke tajurbe ke liye hai. PHF chahti hai ke naujawan players ko aise matches milte rahen taake Pakistan hockey phir se mazboot ho.
