Pakistan and 17 other Arab and Islamic countries have strongly condemned Colombia’s decision to inaugurate its embassy in Jerusalem, saying the move breaches United Nations Security Council resolutions and sets back work toward a two-state solution.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the foreign ministers said they rejected the decision without reservation. They stressed that any attempt to change the legal or historical status of occupied Jerusalem, or to treat it as Israel’s capital, is null and void and carries no legal effect.

What the joint statement said

The ministers argued that Colombia’s step runs against relevant UN Security Council resolutions and undermines international efforts to build a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution — a framework under which an independent Palestinian state would exist alongside Israel.

They specifically pointed to UN Security Council Resolutions 476 and 478, adopted in 1980. Those resolutions reject efforts to alter Jerusalem’s character or status.

Which countries joined Pakistan

According to the statement, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Jordan, Indonesia, Türkiye, Algeria, Djibouti, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt and Yemen took part.

Some public accounts of the same diplomacy have described the group as 18 states including Pakistan, or as Pakistan plus 17 partners. The joint text itself frames the condemnation as coming from Pakistan and 17 other Arab and Islamic countries.

Why Jerusalem’s status matters in this dispute

Jerusalem remains one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many Arab and Islamic governments, including Pakistan, do not accept moves that treat the city as Israel’s capital while occupation and final-status questions remain unresolved under international law.

By opening an embassy there, Colombia has drawn a coordinated diplomatic rebuke from this group of states, which cast the inauguration as both unlawful under those 1980 Security Council texts and damaging to wider peace efforts.
