The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has formally adopted a presidential statement initiated by Pakistan, urging the international community to prioritize diplomacy and peaceful dispute settlement even during active wars. The adoption of the UNSC Pakistan statement occurred on Thursday by consensus among all 15 members of the council, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for Islamabad.

In its formal expression, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to the UN Charter, specifically highlighting the importance of Chapter VI and Article 33. These provisions mandate that parties to any dispute likely to endanger international peace should first seek solutions through negotiation, mediation, or other peaceful means. The statement underscores that communication channels must remain open to facilitate ceasefires and durable political settlements.

Diplomacy during hostilities

The core message of the Pakistan-led initiative is that diplomatic efforts should not cease once fighting starts. Ambassador Syed Haider Shah, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, told reporters that diplomacy becomes even more indispensable when hostilities begin and human suffering increases. He thanked the Council members for their constructive engagement in finalizing the text.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad described the adoption as a substantive contribution to the Council’s thematic work. By bringing together established principles from various conflict situations into a single framework, the statement serves as a collective political reference point for future de-escalation efforts.

Pakistan’s role in the Council

Pakistan is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2025-26 term. This latest presidential statement builds upon Resolution 2788, which was unanimously passed in July 2025 during Pakistan’s month-long presidency of the Council. While presidential statements are not legally binding like resolutions, they represent the unified political will of the world’s most powerful security body.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Pakistan ne UN Security Council mein ek aham kaam kiya hai jahan tamam mulkon ne mil kar faisla kiya hai ke jung ke doran bhi baat-cheet jari rehni chahiye. Iska maqsad ye hai ke laraee ko diplomacy ke zariye roka jaye taake masoom logon ka nuqsan na ho. Pakistan abhi UN Security Council ka rukan hai aur ye faisla dunya mein aman qayam karne ki ek koshish hai.
