What Washington announced
The United States on Wednesday imposed US sanctions Indian companies and related individuals over what the US Treasury called a vast criminal network that helped Iran's shadow fleet of oil tankers commit maritime fraud. In its statement, the Treasury said the network assisted Iranian vessels in sailing under false flags and in securing fake maritime certifications.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent framed the step as part of Operation Economic Outcast, saying countries and firms that aid Iran face consequences. "As we have said many times, under Operation Economic Outcast, you are either with us or against us," he said. He added that Washington would sanction those who keep supporting the Iranian government "whether by land, sea, or air."
Who was named and how the network allegedly worked
Wednesday's action named Indian nationals Suniel Kumar Sharma and his wife, Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, as running a large-scale maritime fraud operation from Chandigarh. The Treasury said the pair had purported to represent nations across continents, citing examples from Guyana to Eswatini and Laos, and in doing so had allowed Iran's shadow fleet to dodge international limits on how those ships operate.
US sanctions Indian companies and persons did not stop with that couple. Officials also targeted two other Indian nationals and a number of firms they said belonged to the same network. Separately, Washington sanctioned Türkiye-based Fugo Ground Services Inc for allegedly continuing to supply services to Iran's aviation sector, which the United States has sought to shut down.
Part of a wider Iran pressure campaign
The step sits inside a broader US effort against Iran that has tightened since August, when Washington said it was pursuing the country's "economic asphyxiation" alongside its military campaign. The United States and Israel went to war with Iran in late February; Tehran's responses hit US allies and closed a vital energy trade waterway.
Earlier this month, the United States also moved against what it called remnants of Iran's shadow tanker fleet used to ship oil products abroad, a round that affected 17 vessels. Wednesday's designations against US sanctions Indian firms and related actors extend that maritime focus from ships themselves to alleged document and flag fraud ashore.

Amrika ne kuch Bharati logon aur un se linked companiyon par pabandiyan laga di hain. Ilzam yeh hai ke woh Iran ke oil tankers ko jhoote flags aur nakli papers se madad dete they — yani samundari dhoka. Yeh Middle East ki jang aur Iran par economic pressure ka hissa hai. Pakistan ke liye seedha faisla nahi aaya, lekin aise qadam aksar oil aur shipping ke mahol ko gehra kar dete hain.
