Pakistan’s No. 1 internationally ranked junior, 17-year-old Mikaeel Ali Baig, has won the ITF J100 Kuala Lumpur singles championship. Seeded fifth, he closed the week with a 6-0, 6-1 final win over Japan’s No. 2 seed, Sota Kagawa, ranked 228, and conceded only one game in the title match.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) runs graded junior events worldwide; a J100 is a higher-level stop on that circuit. For Pakistan, the result adds another strong mark at that tier and lifts Mikaeel Ali Baig’s ITF collection to 16 titles—eight in singles and eight in doubles—while he is still 17.
How the championship week unfolded
In the round of 32 he beat Arya Venkataragavan of India 6-0, 6-0. In the round of 16 he needed a tie-break against Mao Tazuru of Japan, then pulled away for a 7-6(5), 6-1 win.
The quarter-final was another clean sweep: he defeated No. 3 seed Ivan Makarov, ranked 259, by 6-0, 6-0. He then removed the top seed, Japan’s Yuta Amano, ranked 172, by 7-5, 6-2 before meeting Kagawa in the final.
Final against Japan’s second seed
Facing Japan’s No. 2 seed in the final, Mikaeel Ali Baig won 6-0, 6-1. Together with the earlier win over Amano, that means he beat both of Japan’s top two seeds in the same event—an unusual depth of results for a No. 5 seed at this level.
The scoreline left little room for a comeback: after taking the opening set without dropping a game, he gave up only one game in the second before closing out the title.
Federation congratulations
Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, president of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF)—the national body that oversees the sport in Pakistan—Col. (R) Zia-ud-Din Tufail, the PTF secretary general, and the rest of the federation’s management congratulated Mikaeel Ali Baig and his family on the performance and on his wider record of wins against higher-ranked opponents at ITF events.
Officials framed the Kuala Lumpur singles crown as among Pakistan’s more notable junior singles results in recent years and as further evidence of a young player moving up the international ladder.
