PIA inducts first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner at Islamabad

The national carrier’s first Dreamliner landed as flight PK-786 from Heathrow under a wet lease with Norway’s Norse Atlantic Airways, one of two 787-9s secured for the fleet.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which arrived in Islamabad on Sunday from London Heathrow as flight PK-786. A PIA spokesperson said the leased widebody is now with the national carrier. It is the first Dreamliner operated by any Pakistani airline and forms part of PIA’s push to refresh its fleet and grow long-haul flying.

How the aircraft reached Pakistan

The jet is one of two Boeing 787-9s wet-leased from Norway’s Norse Atlantic Airways. The deal is an Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) arrangement—often called a wet lease—under which Norse supplies the plane and its crew and stays responsible for upkeep and insurance. Officials framed the induction as a step toward more modern international operations rather than an outright purchase.

What the Boeing 787-9 can do

Boeing’s published specifications put the 787-9 at 62.8 metres long, with a 60.1-metre wingspan and a height of 17 metres. Maximum takeoff weight is listed at 259,220 kg. The type can seat between 250 and 325 passengers in a two-class layout and fly as far as 8,300 nautical miles, or about 15,370 km, without refuelling. Power comes from two GE GEnx-1B or Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Norse markets its own 787-9s with 338 seats—56 in Premium and 282 in Economy—so the cabin layout passengers see may differ from Boeing’s generic range.

Cabin and efficiency features

Roughly half of the Dreamliner’s airframe is built from carbon-fibre composites. Boeing says that design cuts fuel burn by about 25% compared with the older aircraft the 787 is meant to replace. The composite fuselage also allows the cabin to be pressurised at the equivalent of about 6,000 feet—some 2,000 feet lower than on many conventional jets—while holding higher humidity. Boeing links those conditions to less fatigue and jet lag on long sectors. The type is also described as having the largest windows of any widebody airliner.

Aasan alfaaz mein

PIA ka pehla Boeing 787 Dreamliner Islamabad aa gaya hai, London se flight PK-786 par. Yeh plane Norway ki Norse Atlantic se kiraye par liya gaya hai, crew aur maintenance ke sath. Is se lambi international flights zyada modern plane par ho sakti hain. Musafiron ke liye yeh zyada aaramdeh cabin aur lambi range wala widebody hai.
