Google’s Gemini AI can read and analyse messages to summarise threads, suggest replies, find details and help organise the inbox. Those tools save time, but many people prefer that personal, work or financial mail is not processed for AI helpers—especially when some smart options may already be on, depending on the account and region.
Google says Gemini can process mail to complete a task you ask for, then does not keep that content in Gmail for that purpose after the job is done. In an April 2026 statement, the company said it does not directly use personal Gmail to train its foundational AI models, including Gemini, and described similar treatment for Docs, Drive, Calendar and Sheets. Separately, its privacy documentation notes that connecting Workspace content to Search services may allow certain information derived from emails and files to be used to improve AI systems—so limiting those links matters if privacy is your priority.
Turn off smart features on a computer
In a browser, open Gmail and sign in. Open the Settings gear, choose See all settings, stay on the General tab and scroll to Smart features. Disable Gemini Gmail access on Android and iPhone
In the Gmail app on Android or iPhone, open the menu (three lines), go to Settings, select the account, and turn off Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Open Google Workspace smart features and disable Smart features in Google Workspace and in other Google products. Labels may sit in slightly different places by app version; you can make the same changes on the web if needed. Google says the choices apply across devices signed in with the same account, so you usually do not need to repeat every step on every phone.
Limit connected apps and wider Google activity
Gemini can also use Gmail, Drive, Calendar and other Workspace apps when those connections are enabled. At gemini.google.com, open Settings & help, then Personal Intelligence and Connected Apps, find Google Workspace and turn the link off if it is on. That stops connected-app personalisation from keeping that access; it does not erase material that may already appear in older Gemini chats, so review and delete relevant Gemini activity if you want a cleaner history.
For extra protection, open Search Services History in your Google account and turn it off—or choose Turn off and delete activity if you also want past entries removed. Google says Search services data can help improve products, including generative AI training. You can adjust Save Media if you keep history on but want less media stored. Some accounts may still show older Web & App Activity labels while Google rolls out the newer controls. Under Data & privacy Personalization settings, you can also switch off Personalized Recommendations in Search services; that limits how saved information shapes Search and some AI answers, but it does not wipe old activity or remove personalisation everywhere.
Taken together, these steps are the practical way to stop Gemini Gmail access for inbox helpers, trim Workspace links, and reduce how Search-related activity feeds future AI improvement—without deleting your email itself.
