Hazardous readings across Lahore and Punjab
Lahore AQI level today is deep in the hazardous band after the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI)—a 0-to-higher scale of how dirty the outdoor air is—moved past 530 on Monday. IQAir, a live monitoring platform, put the reading near 535 around 8am, with PM2.5 (very fine dust that can reach the lungs and blood) close to 343 micrograms per cubic metre. Levels had already entered the hazardous category earlier that morning.
Figures shifted hour by hour. On one Monday ranking snapshot, Gujranwala led Pakistan with an AQI of 606, Lahore followed at 509, Faisalabad and Multan each stood at 310, Sialkot at 260, and Peshawar at 216 in sixth place. In later updates the same morning, Gujranwala moved up to 675 while Lahore sat at 535. Five Punjab cities were among the six worst locations on that live list.
Crop burning and the October context
The spike coincides with a large jump in open burning across the province. HamariHawa, reviewing NASA satellite detections, counted 13,241 fire spots in Pakistani Punjab between 1 and 29 October—about 4.2 times the 3,158 marked in Indian Punjab over the same stretch. Roughly 92 percent of the Pakistani detections were on farmland and were assessed as likely leftover-crop burning. Half of the month’s total, 6,655 spots, fell in the final week of October, with a single-day high of 1,327 on 29 October. Okara led with 2,144 detections, then Gujranwala with 1,011 and Nankana Sahib with 1,003.
Separately, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb shared figures putting Lahore’s average AQI in October 2026 at 180.5, versus 204.6 a year earlier, and the Punjab government described that month as the city’s cleanest October in five years. The Pakistan Air Quality Initiative (PAQI) reviewed 26 sites and found average PM2.5 down about 27 percent from October a year before, yet only about 4 percent after weather was factored in. PAQI pointed to a deeper night-time mixing layer—more vertical room for pollutants to spread—as a major reason for the apparent gain.
Secondary keywords such as hazardous air quality Lahore matter less to readers than the practical message: outdoor air is unsafe for routine exposure while these readings hold.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- 1–29 October 2026: NASA-based counts show 13,241 fire spots in Pakistani Punjab, far above Indian Punjab’s tally for the same dates.
- Last week of October: 6,655 of those detections occur; 29 October alone peaks at 1,327.
- October 2026 (monthly average): Punjab cites Lahore’s mean AQI at 180.5; PAQI says weather explains most of the year-on-year PM2.5 decline.
- Monday morning: Lahore’s index moves past 530 into hazardous territory; IQAir shows about 535 near 8am, with later city rankings still placing several Punjab centres among the worst nationwide.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Lahore ki hawa aaj bohot kharab ho gayi hai aur AQI 530 se upar chala gaya hai. Ye level dangerous maana jata hai, khas kar bachon, budhon aur saans ke marizon ke liye. Gujranwala mein kuch hours mein hawa aur bhi zyada gandi rahi. Mask, kam bahir nikalna, aur windows band rakhna ab zyada zaroori hai.
