OpenAI has appointed former US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as senior counselor for national security modernization, a new OpenAI national security post aimed at guiding how artificial intelligence is used in national security, cybersecurity and defence.

The company said the appointment was announced on Monday. In the role, Driscoll will work with OpenAI’s senior leadership, government officials, industry executives, academic institutions and international partners. The brief is to find ways advanced AI can strengthen national security capabilities, with a particular focus on the United States and its allies.

What the new role covers

Driscoll will advise public- and private-sector partners on updating policies and strategies so AI can be built into national security operations. He is also expected to help OpenAI’s internal teams grasp the operational needs and challenges that national security institutions face around the world.

The OpenAI national security brief, as described in the announcement, sits at the meeting point of technology companies, governments and defence users. It does not, on its own, set out a full public rulebook; it creates a senior channel for advice on modernization and responsible use.

Altman and Driscoll on the appointment

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman welcomed the move and stressed international cooperation in how AI is shaped. “AI should give people more power over their lives and people should have a say in how it’s developed,” Altman said.

Driscoll framed the job as a chance to help military personnel and national security institutions benefit from fast-moving technology. “I’m joining OpenAI to help the United States and our allies put this technology to work responsibly, for the people who keep us safe,” he said.

Driscoll’s Army background

Driscoll previously served as the 26th secretary of the United States Army. In that post he oversaw the service’s operations, modernization programmes and how resources were allocated.

His resignation from the Army post followed reported disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over Army leadership and modernization priorities. He has now moved into the private-sector OpenAI national security counselor role described above.

Aasan alfaaz mein

OpenAI ne pehle US Army ke secretary Dan Driscoll ko national security ke naye role par rakha hai. Unka kaam AI ko security, cyber aur defence mein zimmedari se istemal karne mein madad dena hai. Ye kaam khas tor par America aur us ke allies ke liye bataya gaya hai. Is elaan mein Pakistan ke liye koi naya qanoon ya product change nahi bataya gaya.
