What happened at Hassankhel
An anti-drone net installed over the rooftop of Hassankhel police station stopped a quadcopter-dropped improvised explosive device (IED) — a homemade bomb — from reaching the building, police said. The drone released the device over the facility, but the net kept it from hitting the roof.
SP Saddar division Fida Hussain said the IED was locally manufactured and dropped from a quadcopter. He told reporters that the anti-drone net over the rooftop protected the building.
How the device was made
According to Mr Hussain, the attackers used an energy drink bottle filled with explosives, nuts and bolts. He said the device could have caused damage, but the precautionary measures taken by police protected the facility.
An IED of this kind is designed to injure people and damage structures when the bottle ruptures and scatters metal fragments along with the blast.
Wider protection in the division
Mr Hussain said all police installations in his jurisdiction — including Badhber, Mattani and Hassankhel police stations and police posts — have been fitted with similar nets. The step is meant to limit the risk from small drones used to drop explosives onto roofs.
Hassankhel police station sits about 86 kilometres south of Peshawar, the provincial capital. The area borders Peshawar as well as Kohat and Nowshera districts, and police said the station had remained under constant attack for some time.
