One man has died and six people were hurt after the roof of a two-storey structure gave way in the Qalandria Chowk area, close to the New Nazimabad Flyover in Karachi. Rescue officials said the Karachi building collapse happened at a sweet shop at a street corner, where construction work was under way when the roof fell in and people were trapped under the debris.
Rescue and hospital care
Rescuers brought out the body of the dead man, who has been named as Abdul Bari. Six injured people were also pulled from the rubble, and they were transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they received care.
Rescue officials confirmed that the collapse took place while work on the shop was ongoing. What led to the roof giving way has not been established so far, and no further official account of the cause was available at the time of reporting.
The New Nazimabad Flyover is a road overpass in the north of the city, and the Qalandria Chowk junction lies close to it. The sweet shop sat on a corner, so the collapse affected people on the street as well as those inside the shop.
Earlier wall collapse in Malir
The Qalandria Chowk incident follows a separate tragedy last month in another part of the city. A wall of a Union Council office, a local government body at the neighbourhood level, fell onto a rickshaw in Bakra Piri, a locality of Malir. Early reports said three children lost their lives and a man was hurt, with the children's deaths coming both at the scene and later in hospital.
