Wahab: Karachi cull like Turkey would face public campaign

Barrister Murtaza Wahab says bite complaints involve men, women and elderly residents, and that public safety must come before political debate on the response.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has called for immediate action to tackle growing concern over stray dog attacks, arguing that current approaches are not enough to keep residents safe.

Complaints and the mayor’s warning

Wahab said city authorities have received complaints of dog bites involving men, women and elderly citizens. He framed the issue as one of public safety rather than a matter that can be deferred through institutional blame.

He said neutering alone will not resolve the problem and pressed for an effective strategy instead of shifting responsibility to other institutions. The mayor’s remarks place the burden on a clear city-level plan rather than piecemeal measures.

Cull debate and public safety

Referring to Turkey’s decision to kill stray dogs, Wahab said the Karachi administration would face a campaign against it if it took a similar path. His point was that a cull-style response would meet strong pushback, even as he insisted the city cannot leave residents exposed.

He stressed that public safety must take priority over political debate. In his view, argument over who is responsible should not delay steps that reduce the risk of attacks.

Call for consensus on practical steps

Wahab also urged the media to help build consensus on practical measures to protect citizens from dog attacks and the risk of rabies. Rabies is a serious viral disease that can follow an infected animal’s bite; he linked that danger to the need for workable city measures.

What comes next depends on whether municipal departments and other agencies agree on a strategy that goes beyond neutering and addresses bite complaints without adopting a cull that, Wahab warned, would trigger organised opposition.

Aasan alfaaz mein

Karachi ke mayor Murtaza Wahab ne kaha hai ke shehar mein awara kutte ka masla ab control se bahar ja raha hai. Sirf nasbandi se yeh masla khatam nahi hoga, unhon ne clear kaha. Logon ke bite ke shikayat aa rahe hain, aur rabies ka khatra bhi hai. Unka kehna hai ke shehar ki hifazat siyasat se pehle aani chahiye.
