ISLAMABAD — On Thursday, members of the National Assembly and the Senate focused on the KP situation, citing rights complaints in the province while also pressing for election-law changes and a stronger role for the legislature.
What speakers told the National Assembly
Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai said the executive had not briefed the chamber on recent diplomacy involving Tehran. “How can four people decide the future of the whole nation?” he asked, adding that choices made without wider consent could slide the country into disorder and internal conflict.
He further objected to stopping commerce with Afghanistan. He cast Afghans as longstanding neighbours and said Islamabad’s earlier approach toward Kabul had been misguided.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan argued that the tone of the sittings, alongside the KP situation, was leaving citizens with a bleak view of politics. He also urged an end to politics built on family inheritance.
Emergency powers and the Noreen Niazi case
In the upper house, PTI floor leader Barrister Syed Ali Zafar said emergency measures and a governor-run administration in the province had hollowed out constitutional shields. He insisted that core liberties must stay intact even when provincial politics turn sharp. “There is one thing that cannot be broken, suspended or compromised: the fundamental human rights of the people of Pakistan,” he said.
Mr Zafar also highlighted the detention of Noreen Niazi, sister of imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan. He said she had a heart attack, was taken to hospital, and that relatives were blocked from visiting.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah replied that she was treated in Lahore and that her condition was satisfactory. Asked about family access, he said he would obtain particulars and deal with them as the facts required. He defended holding her, alleging she tried to stir disorder by gathering people for a march on Islamabad.
Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas condemned the centre’s steps in the province, saying authority there had been taken away from citizens. He too challenged emergency measures and governor-led rule, arguing that democratic bodies cannot work if the law is brushed aside.
Senate vote on population pressures
Separately, senators adopted a motion urging coordinated countrywide steps on rapid population increase. PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman moved the text, saying Pakistan could have roughly 390 million people by 2050 if today’s growth continues, straining services and the wider economy.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Parliament mein opposition ne Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ke siyasi halaat aur bunyadi haqooq par tashweesh zahir ki. Unhon ne elections ke qaiday badalne aur majlis ko mazboot karne ki bhi baat ki. Emergency aur governor rule par sawalat uthaye gaye, jabke hukumat ne Noreen Niazi ke mamlay mein apna jawab diya. Aam shehri ke liye yeh is liye ahem hai ke province ka intezam, vote ke qawaid, aur haqooq ki hifazat un ki rozmarra zindagi se judi hain.
