The Punjab Education Department has opened the fourth phase of Punjab school outsourcing, under which another 6,460 public schools across the province are to be handed to private management.

A departmental spokesperson said on Thursday that the new tranche covers 5,860 primary and middle schools. For the first time, officials have also put forward a proposal to bring 600 high schools into the same programme. Together those figures make up the 6,460 schools listed for this phase.

Why high schools are in the plan

Officials link the high-school proposal to weak school buildings and a drop in student enrolment in government institutions. The aim, as described in the announcement, is to change who runs these campuses rather than to close the education service itself.

Punjab school outsourcing is not new. The provincial government has already moved 13,600 public schools to private managers in the first three phases. The fourth phase is presented as a further expansion of that model across primary, middle and, if the proposal is accepted, secondary levels.

What changes for the school network

Once the fourth phase is completed, the number of government-run schools in Punjab is expected to fall from around 38,000 to about 31,500. That reduction reflects schools shifting into privately managed arrangements under the programme, not a detailed map of which districts will move first.

The sources do not name the private operators, the timeline for each campus handover, or any change to fees or the curriculum. What is confirmed is the scale of the latest phase, the mix of school levels, and the expected size of the remaining government-run network after the handovers.

What parents and staff should watch next

Families whose children attend the primary, middle or high schools covered by the plan will want clarity on when management changes take effect and who will run each campus. Teachers and support staff will likewise need official guidance on contracts and day-to-day administration once operators are selected.

Further detail on district lists, operator criteria and the status of the high-school proposal will determine how quickly the 6,460-school target is met. Until those steps are published, the confirmed picture remains the size of the fourth phase and the projected drop in government-run schools province-wide.
