Patrick Stewart's death at 86 has been announced by his family: the British actor, long known to Pakistani and global audiences as Star Trek’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the X-Men films’ Professor Charles Xavier, died at his home in Los Angeles.

A statement posted on his X account said Sir Patrick Stewart passed away there in the care of his wife Sunny after what it called a brief and poignant struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, said he died on Wednesday and described him as surrounded by family and friends, with music, prayer, tears and laughter in his final hours.

From Yorkshire stage to Star Trek fame

Stewart was born on 13 July 1940 in Mirfield, Yorkshire, and grew up in poverty. He became an actor at 18 and won stage acclaim with the Royal Shakespeare Company from the 1960s. Mainstream fame came later: he was hired at 47 for Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994.

He played Picard in 176 episodes across seven seasons, in several Star Trek films, and again in the streaming series Star Trek: Picard, which began in 2020 when he was 79. His character’s familiar orders—“Make it so” and “Engage”—became part of popular culture. Friend and fellow Shakespearean Ian McKellen had urged him to stay in theatre; Stewart took the television role anyway and later said Picard and his own beliefs grew hard to separate.

X-Men, knighthood and later life

Stewart also hesitated before accepting the role of wheelchair-using telepath Professor X in the X-Men movies, fearing another fantasy franchise after Star Trek. He was persuaded, and from the first X-Men film in 2000 he became central to that series as well.

Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2010 for services to drama. He was married three times and had two children; his third marriage, in 2013, was to American musician Sunny Ozell. Patrick Stewart's death closes a career that ran from classical theatre into two of the biggest screen franchises of recent decades, with work continuing into his eighties.
