The distribution company's timetable lists most feeders off from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, with the New GHQ feeder in Rawalpindi Cantt the longest at eight hours.

IESCO, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company, has announced a power suspension for Saturday, November 7, affecting parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal. Some neighbourhoods could be without electricity for as long as eight hours, according to the company's shutdown timetable. The company links the shutdowns to planned maintenance and development work.

Most of the affected 11kV feeders, the local lines that carry power toward homes and offices, are due to be switched off from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The timetable gives yearly servicing, building work and upkeep of grid transformers as the reasons. Transformers step voltage down to levels that households and shops can use, so work on them usually requires a full shutdown of the lines they feed.

Where the outages fall

The longest single outage is in Rawalpindi Cantt, where the New GHQ feeder is listed to be off from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. In Rawalpindi City, the KRL Complex feeder runs from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, and feeders in the Satellite Town, City and Westridge divisions are also on the list. Several other feeders stretch beyond the usual five-hour window.

In Islamabad, construction-related feeders serving Bani Gala, Ghauri Town and Sohan are scheduled from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Maintenance on the Nilore-Bahria Enclave 132kV line, a high-voltage transmission route, runs until 4:00 pm. In Attock, several construction feeders and the Sanjwal-Attock transmission circuit are expected to be dark for roughly seven hours.

The Islamabad list also covers Nilore, Tarlai, Bara Kahu, Murree, Jhika Gali and Patriata, along with sectors including D-12, G-10 and I-11. Separately, the F-6 grid station will be shut for power transformer work from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, a shorter midday window for the feeders it supplies.

IESCO's explanation and next steps

IESCO has apologised for the inconvenience and asked consumers for their cooperation. The same maintenance programme also cut power across the region on November 3 and November 4, so residents in the affected areas have faced several planned interruptions within a few days.

Timings are listed feeder by feeder, so households should check the entry for their own area rather than relying on the overall range. The schedule is the company's own, and residents can compare their street or sector against it before Saturday.

Timeline: what has happened so far

  • November 3: IESCO's maintenance programme cut power across the region.
  • November 4: The same programme cut power across the region again.
  • November 7 (Saturday): Scheduled outages of up to eight hours in parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal.
