Currency note rates in Karachi on November 3 showed the US dollar at Rs278.49 on the selling side and Rs275.49 on the buying side. The same board also listed rates for the pound sterling, euro, Japanese yen, Saudi riyal and UAE dirham, along with LIBOR readings used for interest on special US dollar bonds and indicative FBP rates for major currencies.

Dollar, pound and euro notes

For currency notes, the US dollar’s selling rate was Rs278.49 and its buying rate Rs275.49—a gap of Rs3.00 between the two sides of the quote. Pound sterling notes were listed at Rs373.34 selling and Rs368.90 buying. Euro notes stood at Rs311.54 selling and Rs307.87 buying.

These figures matter for travellers changing cash, families receiving foreign currency notes, and shops that deal in physical currency. The selling rate is what customers typically pay when they buy foreign notes; the buying rate is closer to what they receive when they sell notes back.

Yen, riyal and dirham

Japanese yen notes were quoted at Rs1.7639 selling and Rs1.7431 buying. The Saudi riyal was listed at Rs74.21 selling and Rs73.33 buying. The UAE dirham stood at Rs75.83 selling and Rs74.93 buying.

Gulf currencies are widely used by Pakistanis working in Saudi Arabia and the UAE who bring or send cash home. Small differences between buying and selling rates add up when larger amounts are exchanged.

LIBOR and indicative FBP rates

Separately, LIBOR—the London Interbank Offered Rate, a benchmark used to set interest—was listed for calculating interest on special US dollar bonds: 3.9027 for one month, 4.0406 for three months and 4.1642 for six months.

Indicative FBP rates (forward-style quotes for different periods) were also published. For the US dollar they ran from 275.20 at sight/15 days through 273.81 (1M), 270.79 (2M), 268.06 (3M), 265.48 (4M), 262.65 (5M) and 259.84 (6M). Euro indicative figures ranged from 308.02 at sight/15 days down to 292.85 at six months. Pound sterling indicative rates ran from 368.88 at sight/15 days to 348.27 at six months.
