Glenn Maxwell has retired from T20 international cricket for Australia, ending his time in the national colours across formats. The 38-year-old had already left one-day internationals in 2025 and has now also stepped away from Australia’s T20 side and from Victoria, his state team.
How the all-rounder shaped white-ball cricket
Maxwell was a central figure in Australia’s white-ball batting, known for aggressive strokeplay and useful bowling. In 130 T20 internationals he scored 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 and a strike rate of 154.42. He took 51 wickets, held 62 catches, and his highest T20I score was 145 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016.
In ODIs he made 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7. Across international cricket he finished with ten hundreds and 136 wickets. He also played seven Tests and 149 ODIs, alongside a long first-class and List A career with Victoria.
He featured for Australia at the T20 World Cup staged in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. One of his most celebrated performances was an ODI double hundred in a chase against Afghanistan at the 2023 Cricket World Cup—an innings many Pakistani and wider South Asian fans still recall for its improvisation under pressure.
What Maxwell said about walking away
On The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said telling teammates that his last one-day game for Victoria would be his final state appearance was “probably harder than I thought it was going to be” and that he “got a little choked up.”
He said he was “grateful for the time I was able to play for my country,” adding that if such a career had been offered when he first entered the Victoria dressing room around 2009, he “would have bitten your hand off.” He hoped to inspire young players “to want to play differently and to be open and vulnerable and to not shy away and be themselves.”
Maxwell also spoke warmly about receiving his first Test cap “well and truly before I was probably ready,” saying he was glad selectors “took a gamble” on him and that he could, at different stages, “repay the faith.”
Franchise cricket continues
Although international duty is over, Maxwell will keep playing Twenty20 franchise cricket. That includes the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League, so Pakistani viewers who follow overseas leagues may still see him on screen in club colours.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Glenn Maxwell ne Australia ke liye T20 international cricket chhor di hai. Woh pehle 2025 mein ODI se retire ho chuke the, ab Victoria state ke saath bhi khatam. Ab woh franchise T20 khelenge, jaise Big Bash mein Melbourne Stars. Fans unka tez batting style yaad rakhen ge, lekin Australia ki jersey ab nahi pehnen ge.
