New Zealand student visa rules give graduates two months more

Four updates to New Zealand student visa rules take effect on 27 October 2026, ending unlimited work for research master’s students and widening when Immigration New Zealand may pause processing.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ), the agency that manages entry and stay, has put four New Zealand student visa rules changes into force from 27 October 2026. The package tightens in-study work and compliance checks for some learners while giving certain graduates a little more time after their courses end.

For Pakistani families planning study in New Zealand, the practical shift is clearest for research master’s candidates and for anyone whose next steps depend on how long their visa lasts after classes finish.

Work rights for research master’s students

Unlimited in-study work rights for master’s-by-research students have been removed. Those students now face the same conditions as other master’s students: up to 25 hours of work a week during term time, and full-time work only during scheduled holidays.

That aligns research master’s work permissions with the wider master’s cohort and ends the previous open-ended arrangement for this group under the New Zealand student visa rules.

English ability and processing suspensions

INZ has also strengthened its immigration instructions so English-language ability is treated as a key factor when officers assess whether a student can meet visa conditions. In plain terms, stronger English evidence may matter more when INZ judges compliance risk.

Separately, the agency can suspend student-visa processing in a wider set of circumstances. That includes periods when it is investigating possible non-compliance by an education provider. Applicants tied to a school under review could see decisions paused until that process ends.

More time after some courses end

INZ has lengthened the window some students have after finishing their programmes to decide what to do next. Where a visa previously expired one month after the course ended, that period is now two months.

Visas that follow the existing March 31 expiry schedule keep that date; that calendar pattern is not changed by this update.

Together, the four New Zealand student visa rules adjustments mix stricter work and compliance settings with a modest extension for some post-study planning.

Aasan alfaaz mein

New Zealand ne student visa ke chaar rules 27 October 2026 se badal diye hain. Research master’s wale ab term mein haftay ke 25 ghantay tak kaam kar sakte hain, pehle jaisi unlimited facility nahi. English skills aur university ke rules pe INZ zyada nazar rakhega, aur kuch students ko course ke baad faisla karne ke liye ek mahine ki jagah do milenge.
