PTI to contest Islamabad local polls
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to contest the upcoming local government elections in Islamabad, with its regional leadership directing district and town organisations to file nomination papers in every ward across all union councils between November 2 and 6. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the national body that runs elections, has fixed polling for December 20.
Islamabad wing president Amir Mughal said the party would contest all 125 union council seats. He told reporters that PTI workers had visited neighbourhoods across the city for public feedback and claimed that over 95 per cent of people urged the party to take part. He said candidates would contest regardless of which election symbols are allotted.
How the party reached the decision
In a press statement, PTI said Mughal, Shoaib Shaheen and Malik Aamir held more than 25 meetings across the capital’s three electoral constituencies over three days. It said the decision followed online consultations with around 400 office-bearers from regional and district organisations, eight town organisations, all 125 union councils, and party wings including labour, students, youth, traders and women, plus the advisory, working and core committees. According to the statement, 95 per cent of those consulted supported contesting.
The party said it would field candidates committed to public service and loyal to the political ideology of founder Imran Khan, giving preference to workers who have stayed active in the party’s political struggle. Noting earlier delays, it vowed to press for the polls to be held on schedule. Mughal said the commission had already postponed the election four times and feared another delay because of PTI’s popularity in the capital.
Criticism of the election framework
PTI criticised the existing local government law, arguing that elected representatives would lack meaningful powers over basic municipal services such as street cleaning, with authority concentrated in the bureaucracy. It also opposed a reported plan to replace direct election of chairmen and vice chairmen with an indirect vote by councillors, calling that arrangement a possible route for pre-poll rigging if councillors face pressure to change their votes.
The party questioned the plan to announce results four days after polling, saying the gap could open space for manipulation. Claiming Islamabad has traditionally been a PTI stronghold, it expressed confidence of a sweeping win, similar to the result it said it achieved in the 2024 general elections.
