PPP asks opposition to join electoral reform committee
A Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) delegation led by Senator Sherry Rehman on Friday invited opposition parties in Islamabad to join a proposed parliamentary electoral reform committee and work on changes together. The outreach followed directions from PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The group met in the chamber of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and discussed the planned committee.
Sherry Rehman said the PPP wanted an electoral system that had the confidence of all political parties. She asked opposition parties to bring their own proposals to the committee. She linked recurring doubts about the electoral process to pressure on Parliament’s credibility, and said free, fair and transparent elections were needed to protect voters’ rights and strengthen democratic institutions.
What the proposed committee would do
According to Sherry Rehman, a resolution was passed on Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s proposal to form an electoral reforms committee with members from both the National Assembly and the Senate. She said the committee would prepare recommendations on electoral reforms and place them before Parliament for approval. That is the path the PPP is urging other parties to enter, rather than debating the process only outside the House.
Allama Raja Nasir Abbas agreed with the idea of making the electoral process more transparent. The sources do not record a detailed list of draft recommendations, only that the panel’s job would be to prepare them for parliamentary approval.
Who attended the Islamabad meeting
Alongside Sherry Rehman, the PPP side included Nayyar Bukhari, Nadeem Afzal Chan and Senator Waqar Mehdi. On the opposition side, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas was joined by Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Noor-ul-Haq Qadri and Senator Ali Zafar. The meeting framed cross-party participation as central if the electoral reform committee recommendations are to carry wide political ownership.
