The Asian Cup 2027 postponed decision means Saudi Arabia will no longer host Asia’s premier men’s football finals in early 2027 as first planned. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the body that runs Asian football, said the 24-team tournament has been moved because of exceptional regional circumstances, including serious logistical problems and travel disruption after deadly attacks on the host country.
Why the finals were moved
In October, Yemen’s Houthi movement fired a missile at Riyadh’s airport. The attack killed 13 people and wounded more than 300. The AFC said the rescheduling was taken “in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions.” It added that the new tournament dates will be put to FIFA, world football’s governing body, for approval.
Other high-profile sport in Saudi Arabia has already been disrupted. The Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition planned for Riyadh was cancelled. The Asian Tour also indefinitely postponed its season-ending golf event, which had been set for 18–21 November.
New dates and the domestic calendar
The finals were due to run from 7 January to 5 February. Organisers have now set a new window from 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028. The shift is the second Asian Cup postponement in a row: the 2023 edition was moved to 2024 and relocated from China to Qatar because of the Covid pandemic.
The Saudi Pro League postponed this week’s round of matches after the Asian Cup change. The league said the later finals window creates “additional flexibility” so fixtures can be spread more evenly across the rest of the season.
For clubs in Europe’s Premier League, the move reduces the chance that Asian internationals would miss mid-season games. Players linked with possible call-ups included Japan’s Zion Suzuki (Aston Villa), Wataru Endo (Liverpool), Daizen Maeda (Ipswich Town), Ao Tanaka (Leeds United), Takehiro Tomiyasu and Daichi Kamada (Crystal Palace), Hidemasa Morita (Hull City) and Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton, currently injured). Manchester City’s Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Hull City’s Australia defender Lucas Herrington were also among those expected to face international duty.

Aasan alfaaz mein
Asian Cup 2027, jo Saudi Arabia mein hona tha, ab pehle se late ho gaya hai. AFC ne yeh faisla is liye kiya ke mulk mein hamle hue aur travel mushkil ho gaya. Naya schedule 23 December 2027 se 21 January 2028 tak hai. Football fans ko thora intezar karna hoga, lekin tournament cancel nahi hua—sirf dates badli hain.
