Amazon has unveiled the Amazon Echo Show 16, a higher-end smart display that sits above the Echo Show 15. The new model uses a premium aluminum chassis that Amazon says is about 40 percent thinner, pairs it with a 1080p screen that is 10 percent larger, and offers an optional nano-texture surface. Buyers can mount it on a wall or set it on a stand sold separately.
Design, screen and sound
The redesign is meant to make the device feel more like furniture than a tablet on a stand. Alongside the thinner aluminum body, Amazon has fitted a new speaker system with eight woofers and two tweeters. The company says the setup is tuned for clearer video calls and for using the unit as a Fire TV screen, and that the device can automatically reshape the sound to suit the room.

A room-temperature sensor is built in, and Amazon claims the processor is about 20 percent faster than the chip in the Echo Show 15.
Day to day, the device is framed as a compact smart TV and call screen that also runs small apps such as a calendar or photo gallery, talks to Alexa+, and acts as a hub for smart-home controls. For privacy, a physical button cuts power to the cameras and microphones.

Amazon expects to ship the Echo Show 16 before the end of the year. The glossy display is listed at $499.99 and the matte version at $569.99. The tilting stand costs an extra $124.99. Pre-orders come with a $100 discount off those display prices.
