Pakistan has not yet ended daily changes in petrol prices, but the government has assured petrol pump owners that it will move the pricing system toward a fortnightly review. The assurance followed a meeting between the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association and senior petroleum officials.
Why pump owners want a 15-day review
The association has urged the government to replace daily price adjustments with a 15-day review mechanism. Its leaders say frequent changes create business difficulties for petrol pump operators and make day-to-day commercial management harder.
A delegation from the association met the Petroleum Secretary and the Special Secretary Petroleum to discuss those pressures and the rights of operators. Association representatives argued that revising petroleum prices every 15 days, instead of daily, would give pump businesses greater stability.
According to the association, officials acknowledged the challenges facing petrol pump operators and said steps would be taken to shift the existing mechanism to a fortnightly basis as soon as possible. The change has not been completed yet and still depends on government action.
What the petroleum levy amendment would do
Alongside the pricing-review discussion, the government has decided to amend the Petroleum Products Ordinance, 1961. The main aim of the proposed change is to raise the legal upper limit on the petroleum levy that can be charged on petrol and diesel.
The petroleum levy is a government charge built into fuel pricing. A higher legal ceiling would give the authorities more room to increase that charge when they choose to do so. The association and officials have stressed, however, that lifting the ceiling does not by itself mean retail petrol prices will go up.
Any later rise in prices would depend on the levy actually imposed and on other parts of the petroleum pricing formula. In short, the amendment is about legal authority, not an automatic price hike.
What remains unsettled
For now, daily petrol price reviews continue. The promised move to a fortnightly system remains subject to further government steps. The association said it would keep raising operators’ concerns with the relevant authorities and pressing for measures that protect their business interests and legitimate rights.
Readers should treat the fortnightly shift as a stated assurance rather than a completed reform, and treat the levy-ceiling amendment as a change in legal capacity rather than a confirmed increase at the pump.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Abhi petrol ke rates rozana change ho sakte hain; yeh system abhi khatam nahi hua. Petrol pump walon ne hukumat se kaha ke rates 15 din baad review hon. Hukumat ne unhein yeh asaas diya ke jald fortnightly system ki taraf qadam uthae jaenge. Petroleum levy ki legal had bhi barhane ka plan hai, lekin is ka matlab yeh nahi ke pump par rate turant mehnga ho jaye.
